Urban Dor: How did you first hear about Urban Dor, and what is your relationship with the Greater Hartford Jewish Community?

Ari: I first heard about Urban Dor from its founder, Simon Lichter. He has created a fantastic organization that makes a meaningful impact on the community. I moved to West Hartford in June 2022 and quickly fell in love with it.

Urban Dor: Your West Hartford walks to raise awareness about the hostages held by Hamas have become inspiring events with over 100 attendees on Sunday mornings. Tell us about your journey after October 7 to take on this effort.

Ari: Before October 7, I wasn’t heavily involved in Israel advocacy, though I had always been engaged in politics. The horrific events and the global response deeply affected me, prompting me to act. When I saw one-sided, anti-Israel resolutions circulating in Connecticut, I knew I couldn’t stand by. That led to the creation of Greater Hartford for Israel.

Les Loew, a long-time West Hartford resident, suggested the weekly marches after attending one in Baltimore. I initially expected 20-30 people at most for the first march, but over 100 showed up. It was clear there was a strong desire for community action, and the weekly march became a reality.

Urban Dor: Some of our members engage with your Greater Hartford for Israel WhatsApp group. How has the group helped raise awareness and support for Israel?

Ari: The WhatsApp group has been instrumental in organizing marches and other local efforts to support Israel. It has helped build bridges across different segments of the Jewish community. Personally, it has connected me with incredible individuals I wouldn’t have met otherwise. Group members have found a vibrant, action-oriented community dedicated to supporting Israel in whatever ways they can.

Urban Dor: How can people join your weekly walks in support of Israel or the WhatsApp group?

Ari: If they have WhatsApp, they can:

1) From your phone - go to www.tinyurl.com/GreaterHartfordForIsrael.

2) From your computer: visit Greater Hartford for Israel Facebook page, where they’ll find the link to the WhatsApp group.

Urban Dor: We heard you love ultimate frisbee and staying active. What are some local things you’re looking forward to this year?

Ari: I do love ultimate frisbee! In Atlanta, I played pickup games 1-2 times a week year-round. Up here, I’ve taken up squash at the Kingswood Oxford courts, a sport I got into back in Washington, D.C. It’s great because it’s indoors and weather-proof.

West Hartford’s vibrancy, particularly in the Jewish community, always keeps me excited. I’m especially looking forward to the Memorial Day Parade, which brings the community together to celebrate our country and honor those who’ve made the ultimate sacrifice.
