Updated: Apr 7

Elisabeth and Doron’s story began by helping others in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy—and continues to this day through their work and commitment to community.

Urban Dor: What do you both enjoy most about being part of the Greater Hartford Jewish community?

What we enjoy most is being surrounded by a chosen community of both longtime and new family and friends—it truly feels like a gift.

Urban Dor: When did you first hear about Urban Dor?

It’s hard to remember how we first heard about Urban Dor, but we’re glad we did!

Urban Dor: Tell us about your careers. What do you each enjoy most about the work you do?

We both entered our careers to help people. Doron is an R.N. in the emergency room at Hartford Hospital helping people on what could be their worst day.

Elisabeth is a financial planner helping people in a comprehensive way to make the most important financial decisions in their lives.

Urban Dor: Elisabeth, you grew up in West Hartford and attended the former Hebrew Academy (now NEJA). How did you and Doron meet, and what convinced him to move back to your hometown?

We met in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy in New York City in 2012. I was working for UJA-Federation of New York as a strategist and funder, and Doron was working for the JCC of Staten Island and as an EMT in Staten Island. Doron was part of the recovery efforts and knew the affected areas. He was designated by the JCC to give tours to visitors so they could better understand the impact and needs. Doron was my chauffeur during a visit and the rest is history. When we were looking for a place to start a family, West Hartford was the obvious front runner since my parents are still in town and it checked all of the “boxes”, including having a vibrant Jewish community and fantastic public schools.

Urban Dor: Doron, you’ve developed a passion for Krav Maga. What would you like the young adult community to know about Legion of West Hartford and Plus One Defense Systems?

Krav Maga is built on the principle that anyone can learn how to defend themselves. Legion was founded in 2014 in response to the rise of antisemitism and violence against Jewish people and their allies. I believe all Jewish people and allies should know how to defend themselves. It’s a fantastic resource available here in the Greater Hartford-area, and regardless of skill or previous experience, it’s accessible. Plus One Defense Systems, a martial arts studio located in West Hartford, hosts Legion and houses multiple martial arts styles including Krav Maga, Muay Thai, and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. The owner is a proud supporter and ally of the Jewish community.

Urban Dor: It’s a warm, sunny Sunday and you’re spending the day in Greater Hartford—where are you going?

We love to go for walks at the reservoir, visit local farms, swing by the JCC Swim & Tennis Club, or visit local spots, such as Gastro Park and Talcott Mountain Collective.

Urban Dor: If people want to connect with you or learn more about what you’re doing, what’s the best way to reach you?  Email is the best way! Doron's email is roth.doron@gmail.com. Elisabeth’s email is eliskostin@yahoo.com.
